let's take a closer look at communication skills

Increasing communication skills

Below is an example of working with a client who has a general goal of increasing their communication skills.

A great music therapy activity to assist with addressing this goal would be using the drums to create a call-and-response between the client and therapist. This specific music activity encourages active listening to what is played and responding based upon what is heard. While working primarily on communication, this activity will set the stage for several other need areas to be addressed such as:

  • Social interaction as the therapist and client are engaging in interactive music play
  • Cognitive stimulation as the client is recalling specific patterns played by the therapist
  • Physical coordination skills as the playing of the drum assists with gross motor movement
  • Emotional needs as the client may find success within the activity which may provide a sense of increased self-esteem

These are just a few areas of how music therapy can assist an individual with meeting goals effectively and efficiently while also engaging in a fun and motivating experience driven by their own preferences.
